Catalina Portillo
Catalina Portillo

Catalina Portillo, age 63, of Odessa, TX entered eternity on Wednesday, February 28, 2018.  She was born in Juarez, Mexico on April 30, 1954 to the late Martin and Enriquita (Renteria) Portillo.  She was a homemaker, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Those left to cherish her love and memories are her son: Louis Aguilar (Yolanda); daughters: Rosa Rogers and Belen Aguilar; brothers: Arnulfo Portillo (Irma), Arturo Portillo (Sandra), Martin Portillo (Anita) and Armando Portillo (Paloma); sisters: Martha Aguilar, Virginia Jiminez (Juan) and Cecilia Alvarado; as well as 11 grandchildren: Angelina, Annabel, Gabriel, Luis Lorenzo, Miguel, Crystal, Vanessa, Stephanie, Sara and Nicolas and 9 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 4:00 pm on Friday, March 2, 2018 at Acres West 24 Hour Chapel.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Jimmy Wayne Thompson 2018
Jimmy Wayne Thompson

Jimmy Wayne Thompson, age 70, of Odessa, TX, passed away Monday, February 26, 2018 at Christus Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, TX.  He was born in Crockett, TX on June 18, 1947 to the late J.W. and Nova Pauline "Pat" Thompson.  Jimmy married Betty Ann Fowler on October 3, 1968 and they were together for 24 years. To this union, his son was born, Curtis Wayne Thompson.  He married Gloria Pittman on September 11, 1993 in Odessa and formed a family with her four children.  He and Gloria were together until separated by her death October 18, 2013.  He was a manager at a Bingo hall with the Ector Lion's Club and also worked for his brother Gary Lynn Thompson at Thompson Laydown.  He later retired to live on the lake in Avenger, TX with his brother Curtis Dean Thompson.

Jimmy had an old Ranchero and loved drag racing.  He was a big John Wayne fan and loved to watch the classic Westerns.  Jimmy was involved with the Lion's Club for 30 years.  He was very close to his fellow Lions and greatly enjoyed helping people, especially children. He was also considered a father figure to many children throughout his athletic coaching career.  He had a heart of gold and loved music and dancing. He enjoyed going out and spending time with family and friends.  His charisma attracted people and he never met a stranger.  He was generous and had a outgoing personality that lit up the room.  He was beloved by many and will be greatly missed. 

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his children:  three sons:  Curtis Wayne Thompson, Donald Ray Hodges, Jr., and Brandon Carter; daughters:  Misty Anderson and Dominique Hodges; seven grandchildren:  Tosha Putty, Ashley Benson, Jasmine Gameros,  Shawnda Weeks, Brandon Weeks, Cheyanne Anderson, and Nathian Meadows; great-grandchildren:  Aubrey and Landon Putty; Elijah, London and Madeline Benson; brothers:  Curtis Dean Thompson and wife Lynne, Gary Lynn Thompson, and Tony Ray Roberts and wife Jennie; sisters:  Linda Gail Thompson and Brenda Sue Werner; and sister-in-law:  Shelia Thompson.

He is preceded in death by his parents:  J. W. and Pat Thompson; beloved wife:  Gloria Thompson; and brother:  Wade Thompson.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 pm Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Charles Shuffield.  Interment follows at Peaceful Gardens Section of Ector County Cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Luther Scarber Jr 2018
Luther Alvin Scarber, Jr.

Luther Alvin Scarber, Jr., age 67, of Odessa, TX passed from this life on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. He was born in Quanah, TX on May 14, 1950 to the late Luther Scarber Sr. and Dorothy (Davis) Scarber.  He was a heavy equipment hauler for Holloman.

Those left to cherish his love and memories are his daughters:  Lisa Tatom, Donna Kilgore, and Lori Davis; brothers:  Marvin Scarber and Zilmer Ward; and three grandchildren:  Logan Tatom, Rainy Crenshaw and Donavan Kilgore.

His parents and sisters:  Melba Scarber and Lynn Scarber, precede him in death.

Memorial services are scheduled for 10:00 AM Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Acres West Funeral Chapel.  Graveside services will be privately held. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Johnny Rivera OCon 2018
Johnny Rivera O'Con

Johnny Rivera O'Con, 88,  was called home by his Heavenly Father on Friday, March 2, 2018.  He began this earthly journey in Marquez, TX on June 12, 1929, born to the late Nicholas O'Con and Ramona (Rivera) O'Con.  Johnny served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from September of 1952 to August of 1954, earning the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

He will be truly missed by his daughter:  Elisa O'Con; son:  Johnny Ray O'Con; sisters: Francis Martinez and Monica Cortinez; 14 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great grandson.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his son:  Johnny O'Con; daughters:  Wanda Turner and Dionicia O'Con; sister: Lupe O'Con; and five brothers.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Gilberto Abreo Benavidez, age 61, of Odessa, TX entered eternity on Friday, March 2, 2018. He was born in Van Horn, TX on November 22, 1956 to the late Domingo and Lorenza Fierro (Abreo) Benavidez.  He was a construction worker.

Those left to cherish his love and memories are his beloved wife: Dora Steele of Odessa; son: Cesar Benavidez of Hobbs, NM; daughter: Kelsey Gallegos ( Jr.) of Odessa; brothers: Abelardo Benavidez (Lourdes) of Odessa, Eduardo Benavidez of Odessa, Xavier Rosa (Belinda) of Houston; sisters: Edelinda “Linda” Rehmel (Bob) of Las Vegas, NV, Minerva Alonzo (Katu) of Alpine, Delma Benavidez of Waco, Sandra Rosa Cabezuela (Jose Luis) of Van Horn, Lorenza Rosa of Odessa, and Veronica Garza (Robert) of Fredericksburg; as well as seven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Alfredo A. Benavidez and Mario A. Benavidez; and sister: Yolanda Benavidez.

Memorial services will be held in Van Horn at a time and date to be announced, followed by interment at the Van Horn Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Brenda K Vicars 2018
Brenda Kay Vicars

Brenda Kay Vicars, age 69, of Gardendale, passed from this life on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa.  She was born in Odessa on Sunday, February 20, 1949 to the late Audrey Wayne "Jack" and Maxine (Bynum) Creel.  Brenda worked as a mortgage underwriter for over 20 years.

Brenda was an outdoorsy person who loved gardening and fishing.  When no one else could get a bite, she would be reeling them in!  She and Joe enjoyed riding their motorcycles and took many fun trips together to Bandera, TX and to Howard, CO to see the hummingbirds.  Her grandsons and her puppies (Bonnie, Clyde, and Spicy) were her pride and joy!

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her life partner:  Joseph Herrin; son:  William "Robbie" Truelock and wife Margie; and three grandchildren:  Jack Nolen, Noah Kyle, and William Baron Truelock.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers:  Johnny Creel and Wayne Creel.

Memorial services will be held at Greenfield Acres Baptist Church on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Thursday 2:00 pm, officiated by Pastor Jimmy Skiles.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Robert Louis Jones

Robert Louis Jones, age 71, of Odessa, passed away at Buena Vida Nursing Home in Odessa, on Saturday, March 3, 2018.  He was born in Del Rio, TX on Wednesday, June 26, 1946 to the late Jack Clifford Jones and Maggie Louise (Willhit) Jones.  He worked for Abbot Oilfield Supply for many years.

Graveside Services will be 2:00 pm on Thursday, March 8, 2018 at Rose Hill Gardens section of Ector County Cemetery, officiated by his longtime friend:  Rev. Dean Duckett. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Leonardo Hernandez

Leonardo Hernandez, age 70, of Odessa, TX entered eternity on Sunday, March 4, 2018. He was born in Esmeralda, Chihuahua, Mexico on July 27, 1947 to Maria Jurado and the late Faustino Hernandez.

Leonardo grew up in Pecos and was a very hard worker. He worked for many years as an insulator. He was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was well known, friendly and never met a stranger. He also enjoyed fishing in his free time

Those left to cherish his love and memories are his mother: Maria Jurado; sons: Jesus Manuel Hernandez and Lorenzo Hernandez (Adriana); daughter: Lidin Hernandez (Martin Seiler); brothers: Esequiel Carrasco (Sheila), Jose Luis Hernandez and Carlos Lujan; sisters: Norma Lujan, Irma Lujan and Modesta Lujan; as well as 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father: Faustino Hernandez and sister: Ida Pineda.

Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm, Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Acres West 24 Hour Funeral Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am, Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Larry Butch Poor 2018
Larry "Butch" Poor

Larry "Butch" Poor, age 64, of Odessa, TX, passed from this life on March 4, 2018. He was born in Odessa on January 25, 1954 to Lee and Robbie Lou (Shamburger) Poor.  Butch worked a wide variety of jobs, including computer tech, mechanic, machinist and a mud logger in the oilfield.  He loved to work with his hands and providing for his family was always a priority.  A hard worker, he was never afraid to get his hands dirty and was never one to put off for tomorrow what he could get done today.

Those left to cherish his love and memories are his beloved wife: Beth (Clark) Poor; son:  Brent Ray Poor; sisters:  Carron Shellenberger  and husband Butch (with whom he shared his name and lots of mischief), and CC Crosby; adopted sister:  RobbieLee Davis and husband Mike; brother:  Lloyd Poor and wife Paula; two granddaughters:  Jessie and Delanie; his beloved Coco; and too many special friends to list.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Carol Ross.

Visitation will be all day Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, with a prayer service to be held at 7:00 pm. John James Ritter 2018
John James Ritter

John James Ritter, age 68, of Odessa, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 4, 2018.  He was born in Belfast, Ireland on December 10, 1949 to the late William G. and Margaret Ritter.  He proudly served his country in the US Air Force during the Vietnam War.  John also worked in the oilfield as a driller, as well as working maintenance for Winkler County and serving as a volunteer fire fighter.

John was a laid back person.  He had his crazy side and was a free spirit.

John is survived by his daughters:  Kelly Ritter Tidwell and husband Eric, and Rhonda Ritter, all of Odessa; son:  Sean Fussner of Tipton, MO; two sisters:  Patricia "Pat" Ritter of Silver Springs, MD and Peggy Margaret Ritter of Mastic, NY; his spouse:  Mary Linda (Ramos) Ritter of Lubbock; and four grandchildren:  Sean and Timothy Fussner of Palm Bay, FL and Jossilyn Tidwell of Odessa.

He is preceded in death by his parents and granddaughter, Miyah Ritter, who passed away October 18, 2011.

Visitation will begin at noon on Friday, March 9, 2018, with a Rosary to be recited at Acres West Funeral Chapel Friday evening at 7:00 pm.  Funeral services with military honors will be 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 10, 2018 at Acres West, officiated by Brother Larry Hood.
