Hays quit school at the age of 13 to go to work and help his single mom make ends meet.  He worked hard doing anything he could to bring in money.  When he was old enough to join the Army Air Corps, he continued to send most of his pay to his mom.  When he finished his stint with the Air Corps, he met and married the love of his life, Christine Harris.  They wed in Goldthwaite on April 30, 1947.  After starting his family, he went to work for the Brownwood Fire Dept.  In the early 50’s, he moved to Odessa and became one of the first groups of firemen to start the Odessa Fire Department.  He drove a ladder truck for a number of years before becoming an arson investigator.  After retirement from the Odessa Fire Department, he went back to work as an emergency dispatcher.  While working for the OFD, he always had a part time job to help make ends meet.  After full retirement, he opened a lawnmower shop.  There was nothing he couldn’t do or, at the very least, try to do.  He would do anything for anybody and was loved by all.  He bowled until he was in his 80’s, when he was forced to quit because of a bad arm.  After the death of his life companion, he moved to Lincoln Towers, where he was welcomed by an awesome staff and numerous new friends.  While at Lincoln Towers, he played bridge 2 to 3 times a week, poker a couple of times a week, and he absolutely loved when they did Karaoke once a month.  He will be greatly missed by all.
