Leroy S Johnson
Leroy S. Johnson II

Leroy S. Johnson II, 54, of Odessa, was called to heaven on August 27, 2014 in Odessa. Leroy was born to Leroy S. Johnson Sr. and Iris (Hill) Farr on June 22, 1960. Leroy worked for the oilfield before retiring. He married the love of his life Betty Barker on April 11, 2006 in Odessa.  Leroy was a simple man.

Those left to cherish his memories are his loving wife: Betty Johnson of Odessa, mother: Iris Farr of Midland, sons: Josh Johnson, Jason Johnson and Bryan Johnson all of Midland, and Timothy Barker of Odessa, and sisters: Jaquie Daniel of Midland and LaNece Goodson of Odessa.

Leroy is preceded in death by his father Leroy S. Johnson Sr. and one brother.

Funeral Service will be held at Acres West Funeral Chapel on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 4:00 p.m. with Dr. Dewey Blevins “Bro” officiating.   Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral, 8115 W. University Blvd, Odessa, TX.

Toby Cecil “Bird” Adkisson

Toby Cecil “Bird” Adkisson, 31, of Odessa was called to heaven on August 27, 2014 in Fort Stockton, TX. Toby was born to Cecil Dale Adkisson and Cecilia Diane (Meurer) Adkisson in Odessa, TX on June 8, 1983. Toby worked for Cosi Casing & Laydown.  He enjoyed his job, living to work and working to live. 

Toby was a very loving, son, brother, and friend, who impacted the lives of each and every person who knew him.  A very generous person with a great sense of humor, he loved big and was loved big.  Many of his beloved friends were like family to him.  He enjoyed riding motorcycles and loved listening to his dad’s music. 

Those left to cherish his memories are his father: Cecil “Big Bird” Adkisson and step mom Rebecca of Odessa, mother:  Diane Adkisson of Odessa, brother: Andy Adkisson of San Angelo, sisters: Starla Redwine and husband Michael, Jana Spruill and husband Bobby and Evee Adkisson, all of Odessa, nephews: Zack, Kaleb, Jacob, Brady, niece: Brinley, aunts and uncles: Linda and James Redwine, Pam and James Dennis, Terry and Stacia Adkisson, Gerald and Kay Meurer, Doug and Shannon Meurer, Debbie and Rusty Patterson, Allisa and Prentice Hill, and Bobby Meurer, and numerous cousins and friends. 

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at Acres West Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd, Odessa, TX. 

Dean Hood  Ellis Hood
Ellis Dean Hood

Ellis Dean Hood, age 87, of Odessa, passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at 6:00 pm at his residence.  He was born in Owens, TX in Brown County on November 21, 1926 to the late Berry and Emma Hood.  He was the youngest of six siblings.  Dean was a veteran of World War II and served in Japan in the mop up operation.  He was a Sgt. MP in the US Army, leading to his working for a number of years in law enforcement and later in the oilfield. 

He married Doris White in Odessa on February 2, 1950 with Rev. J.B. Dolan officiating.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 ½ years:  Doris Hood of Odessa; two children:  Sherry Cooney Robison and husband Mickey of Edmond, OK and Larry Dean Hood and wife Linda of Odessa; grandchildren:  Patrick Dean Cooney and wife Tosha, Michael Cooney; step grandchildren:  Hayley Fry Jordan and husband Stetson and Patrick Fry; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held in Odessa at 7:00 pm on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at the Lutheran Church of the Risen Lord at 21st and Grandview, Odessa, officiated by Rev. Jimmy Braswell and in Early, TX on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at Early First Baptist Church at 2:00 pm, officiated by Pastor John Hood.   Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Dean's memory to Home Hospice, 516 N. Texas, Odessa, TX 79761.

Heriberto “Eddie” Arenivas

Heriberto “Eddie” Arenivas, age 58, of Odessa, passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 30, 2014 while vacationing in Ruidoso, NM.  He was born in Tierras Nuevas, Ojinaga, CH, Mexico on New Year’s Day of 1956 to the late Alfonso and Maria del Refugio (Ramirez) Arenivas.  He liked to say, “Y arriba Tierras Nuevas!”  Eddie married Rosa Emma Sanchez on August 14, 1981 and they had just celebrated 33 years together.  He was retired from working as a roustabout in the oilfield.  He was Catholic, attended St. Joseph Catholic Church, and was a member of the group, “Pequeños Hijos de Maria.” 

Eddie was a very happy person, always smiling and friendly.  He was always quick to lend a helping hand to others.  Eddie enjoyed cookouts, camping, and spending time with his family.  He and Rosa enjoyed their daily visits to Dairy Queen.  His grandchildren were the light of his life and were always close to his heart.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife: Rosa Emma Arenivas of Odessa; sons:  Rigoberto Arenivas, Roberto Arenivas, and Hervey Arenivas, all of Odessa, Heriberto Arenivas of Roswell, NM, and Norberto Arenivas of Levelland; daughter:  Carla Sanchez of Odessa; brothers:  Humberto Arenivas of Lubbock, Modesto Arenivas of Roswell, TX, and Adalberto Arenivas of Hagerman, NM; sister:  Lila Garza of Odessa; and thirteen grandchildren.

Rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm at Acres West Funeral Chapel on Thursday, September 4, 2014.  Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am Friday, September 5, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Peaceful Garden of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Janie Miller
Janie Catherine Miller

Janie Catherine Miller, age 66, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, September 04, 2014 in Odessa.  She was born in Texarkana, AR on January 4, 1948 to the late Clinton and Martha (Collins) McArthur.  She was a 1966 OHS graduate.  Janie married Bobby Joe “B. J.” Miller in Highlands, TX on May 25, 1990.  She was a homemaker.

Janie, lovingly known to many as “Mamal,” was a devoted wife, loving mother, sister and aunt, and a doting grandmother and great-grandmother.  She loved watching “Criminal Minds” and “Tombstone” and even joined Twitter, so that she could vote for “The Voice.”  She loved green Skittles and eating popcorn for breakfast, lunch, and even dinner.  Her passing has left a hole in our hearts.

She is survived by her husband:  B. J. Miller of Odessa; sons:  Calvin “Eddie” Trout and wife Pamela of Odessa, Michael “David” Trout and wife Sarah of Houston, and Bobby Miller and wife Robin of Highlands; daughter:  Kathy Rugh and husband Ed of Baytown; her sisters:  Carolyn Benson of Westminster, MD,  Mary Lou Hahn of  Robert Lee, and Maggie Cathey of Portales, NM; grandchildren:  Sean, Candice, Sasha, Gabby, Amber, Aaron, Kaigan, Carson, Bayley, Brynnley, Briley, Joel, Josephine, Jasmine, Jake and Jaclyn; great-grandchildren:  Slade, Garrett, Raylynn Jo, Brandon, K. K. and Myrakle; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

Janie is preceded in death by her parents:  Clinton and Martha McArthur and her brother:  Robert “Bob” McArthur.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am Monday, September 8, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Larry Hood.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Thereasa DaSha McKinzie

Thereasa DaSha McKinzie, 62, of Odessa, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2014 in Odessa. She was born on July 22, 1952 in Odessa to Ralph D. Crow and Norma Jo Benefield.

Thereasa was a very loving woman. She adored her grandchildren. When she lost her husband, Danny, she mourned him for ten years, never looking for another man. She liked having her computer and she loved getting on Facebook to see what her treasured friends on Facebook were doing. Thereasa liked to relax, and she tried to take it easy.

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her daughters Melanie Kay Bradley and Shahala Dawn Tippett, both of Odessa; brother Ricky Crow of Ft. Worth; grandchildren Toni, Derek, Ericka, Jaycen, Lucas, Jessica, Brenden, Catelyn, and Rory; and great grandchildren Kaylynn, Tracey, and Jayde.

Thereasa was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph Crow and Norma Benefield; husband Danny McKinzie; brother Randy Crow; and sisters Diann Nelson and Vicky Crow.

Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Elba Jean Wilkerson
Elba Jean Wilkerson

Elba Jean Wilkerson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and aunt, left this world to join her Heavenly Father on Saturday, September 6, 2014.  Jean had enjoyed 84 years of a wonderful blessed life.  She was born to Elbert Oran Bennett and Jessie Mae (Parker) Bennett in Roby, Texas on December 21, 1929.

Jean married the love of her life, G.W. “Dude” Wilkerson on May 13, 1945.  After he returned from WWII, Dude and Jean brought their first child into this world, Sharon Elaine.  Almost four years later, they brought home Gary Oran and called their home complete.  Jean worked as a bookkeeper most of their married life in Roby, Gail, and Odessa.  Sharon blessed their family with two granddaughters, Jessica and Tracey.  Gary blessed their family with one granddaughter, Amanda.  These girls blessed them with eleven great-grandchildren:  Tatiana, Taylor, Nathan, Sarah, Rylee, G.W., Jon, Myka, Austyn, Savannah, and Aubree. 

Jean is preceded in death by her parents, her sister, her beloved husband, her daughter, and one great-grandson.

Survivors include: Gary Wilkerson and his wife Becky of Big Spring, TX; Jessica Jordan and husband Archie of Odessa, TX, Amanda Blissard of Big Spring, TX,  Tracey Jordan and husband Charley of Odessa, TX; and her loving great-grandchildren:  Tatiana Truelove and husband James of Houston, TX, Taylor Slocumb, Nathan Jordan, Sarah Jordan, Rylee Jordan, G. W. Jordan, Jon Jordan, Myka Blissard, Savannah Jordan, and Aubree Blissard.

Graveside services to honor her memory will be held at Peaceful Gardens of Ector County Cemetery, on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. officiated by Rev. Bob Bratcher.  Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Kellis Elbert Wilkerson

Kellis Elbert Wilkerson, age 77, of Odessa, passed from this life on Saturday, September 6, 2014 in Odessa.  He was born in Gail, TX on September 4, 1937 to the late William Monteville Wilkerson and Mary Lue (Price) Wilkerson.  He married Marian Antonia Chapa in Lubbock, TX on April 2, 1966.  Kellis was an ordained minister back in the day.  He retired from Champion Chemicals as a truck driver.

Kellis was gruff on the outside, but a softie on the inside.  He had a kind heart and would do anything for anyone. He was there when you needed him, but you might hear about it later.  He was always picking on people, loved joking around, and had a crude sense of humor.  Kellis loved his family and had a deep concern for others.  You would often hear him say, “Just don’t know what we’re gonna do.”  He enjoyed fishing, listening to old music, and playing on his computer.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife:  Marian Wilkerson of Odessa; two sons:  Kellis Wilkerson, Jr. of Odessa and Dwayne Wilkerson of Dallas; daughters:  Susanne Althea Clark of Midland and Charlotte Wallace and husband Billy of Odessa; brother:  Bill Wilkerson and wife LaGrace of Odessa; grandchildren:  Kelli Flores and husband Bernardo and their children, (Abigayl, Anavel, and Bernardo Jr.), Kevin Colt Wallace and his children (Kevin II, Kaylee, Faith, and A. J.), Stormy Marie Hawkins, Crystal Ann Wilkerson, Johnny Brett Clark, and Mary Christine Doerr; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, seven sisters, and one son who passed at an early age of 24:  David Isaac Wilkerson.

Public visitation will begin at 11:00 am Tuesday.  Funeral services with military honors will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel Crematory.

The family wishes to thank Star Hospice for their care and the staff at Medical Center, who always took the time to make things personal and call Kellis by name.

Adam Ruiz
Adam Salas Ruiz, Jr.

Adam Salas Ruiz, Jr., aged 45, passed away on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 in Odessa, TX. He was born in Ft Stockton, TX on Friday, January 24, 1969 to Adam M. Ruiz, Sr. and Martha Salas.

Adam was an easy going guy and a huge jokester. He was carefree. Nothing ever seemed to bother him. If it did, nobody ever knew it. Adam was compassionate, he was always there for anybody who needed it, and even if you didn’t! He talked to everyone, but was very mindful of his words.  He never cursed. He was a strong and stubborn man, very hard headed. Adam bragged about his kids all the time, saying when he was gone there would be little “ME’S” everywhere. He was a huge Patriot fan. Adam loved low riders, and liked racing his “Traxxas” cars. Being a kid at heart, he had about seven of them. His absolute favorite holiday was Christmas. His father said he was just like his brother, but Adam was one of a kind.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife:  Jackie Lopez of Odessa, TX; father: Adam and wife Baola Ruiz of Odessa, TX and mother: Martha Salas of Grand Prairie, TX; sons: Adam Anthony and wife Melanie Ruiz and Jacob Nicolas Lopez Ruiz, all of Odessa, TX; daughters: Tiphny Ruiz, JulieAnna Lopez Ruiz and Adamari Lopez Ruiz, all of Odessa, TX; brother: Javier and wife Esmeralda Ruiz of Grand Prairie, TX; sisters: Sylvia Salas of Bakersfield, CA, Monica Ruiz of Grand Prairie, TX, Adna Ruiz of Arlington, TX, Annabelle Ruiz of Houston, TX, Annaleigh Ruiz of Odessa, TX, Melina Ruiz of Odessa, TX; and granddaughter: Lucita Fernandez-Ruiz of Odessa, TX.

The family will receive friends at Acres West Funeral Chapel on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at noon. Funeral services will be held Monday, September 15, 2014 at 10 AM, officiated by Deacon Saul Palma with interment to follow at Peaceful Gardens Section of Ector County Cemetery. Alga LaVaughn (Bonnie) Cheairs

Alga LaVaughn (Bonnie) Cheairs began her life on January 20, 1930 in Brownwood, Texas.  She was welcomed by her parents, Jess and Lucille Blackstock.  On Tuesday evening, September 9, 2014, she peacefully began her new life, her eternal life with Jesus in Heaven.

Bonnie was a beautiful young woman when she met the love of her life, a handsome young sailor who had recently returned from the war, Auther Clifton Cheairs.  At the age of 16, on December 12, 1946, she began her life as Mrs. Auther Cheairs.  They were blessed to spend almost 68 wonderful years together.

Bonnie and Auther had two children, David and Judy. As a Mother, she was always available for cub scouts, boy scouts, brownies, and girl scouts. She happily accepted the role of room mother, helped with class parties and enjoyed being with her children as well as all of their friends.  Bonnie loved to bowl, she and Auther traveled to tournaments frequently with Bonnie’s sister-in-law, Bernice and her brother J.W. Blackstock.  J.W. and Auther were just along for the trip and to support their wives. She also loved to fish and would never pass up the opportunity to “wet a hook”. 

Bonnie is survived by her husband, Auther of Odessa; children:  David and Carla Cheairs of Arlington, Judy Cichon of Odessa; grandchildren:  Chris and Lori Beam of Springtown, John Cheairs of Calera, Oklahoma, Becky and Dale Laird of Flower Mound, Tina Cheairs of Carrollton, Amber and Edgar Hernandes of Odessa, and Azure Dodson of Humble; great-grandchildren:   Taylor, Alyssa, Madi, Riley, Grace, Zoi, Faith, Fallon, J.J. and Amos; great-great grandchildren:  Samantha and Elizabeth; siblings:  Reata, Carolyn, J.W., Clovis, Donnie and Lonnie; and many nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

There will be a celebration of Bonnie’s life on Friday, September 12, 2014 at Odessa Bible Church at 10 am, officiated by Pastor Bob Thayer.

It does not insist on its own way, it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoings, but rejoices with the truth. Jessie Ortega, age 50, of Odessa, passed away at Medical Center Hospital on Friday, September 12, 2014.  He was born in Floydada, TX on August 6, 1964 to the late Gregorio and Lidia (Segura) Ortega.  Jessie married Carmen Romero in Odessa on September 12, 1989 and together they raised four children.  He owned and operated Road Dog Mobile Wash.

Jessie was an outdoorsman.  He enjoyed fishing, bar-be-queing, and riding horses.  He had a huge heart and would always give others the benefit of a doubt.  He loved his grandchildren dearly.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife:  Carmen Ortega of Odessa; three sons:  Jessie Ortega, Jr. and wife Aracely and Derrick Ortega, all of Odessa and Andrew Elliot of Lubbock; three daughters:  Janelly Lopez and husband Justin and Desirae Ortega, all of Odessa, and Kimberly Ortega of Lubbock; siblings:  Johnny Ortega of San Antonio, Ramon Ortega of Huntsville, Diana Hay and husband Mike of Albuquerque, NM, and Beatrice “Tisha” Weatherd and husband Todd of Salina, KS; close family:  Seferino Ortega,Jr, Oscar Ortega, Modesta Cervantes, Estella Ortega, Veronica Ortega, and Rosa Ortega; and ten grandchildren:  Camilah, Anacely, Oakley, Zaethan, Makaylie, Zerrick, Anthony, Riley, Madaline, and Ryan.

Funeral services will be 5:00 pm Monday, September 15, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Mike Hay.  Rosary will be recited that same night at 7:00 pm.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 am Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, officiated by Father Michael Rodriguez.  Interment will follow at Peaceful Garden Section of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.
