A Martinez
Alfonso Martinez

Alfonso Martinez, age 83, of Odessa, died Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at his home.  He was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on April 24, 1930 to the late Jose Maria Martinez and Catalina (Ordones) Martinez.  He was Catholic.

He is survived by four sons:  Angel Martinez, Carlos Martinez, and Alfonso Martinez, all of Odessa, and Martin Martinez of Chihuahua, MX; daughter:  Patricia Martinez of Albuquerque, NM; brothers:  Miguel Martinez of Virginia, Alberto Martinez of Mexico, and Jose Martinez of Dallas; sisters:  Aurelea Martinez of Juarez, Adelina Martinez of Chihuahua, MX, and Hermelina Martinez of Chihuahua, MX; and numerous grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Rosary was said at Acres West Funeral Chapel at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, March 5, 2014.  Funeral services will be at a later date in Albuquerque, NM with interment at San Jose Armijo Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Epifania “Annie” Gomez Lujan

Epifania “Annie” Gomez Lujan, age 68, of Odessa, passed from this life on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Medical Center Hospital.  She was born in Edinburg, TX on January 13, 1946 to Ramona (Tobias) Gomez and the late Pablo Gomez.  Epifania married Hijinio Lujan in Odessa in 1986.  She was a homemaker.  She was a member of Iglesia Bautista El Mesias and was a treasure to her church.

Annie’s family was her joy.  She called her mother often and delighted in her grandchildren.  She was a faithful Christian woman who loved to pray and read her Bible.  She loved listening to Christian music and enjoyed attending church.  Annie also liked to sew.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband:  Hijinio Lujan; mother:  Ramona Gomez; daughter:  Jeanette Betancourt and husband Richard Jr.; brothers:  Joe Gomez and Ricardo Gomez, all of Odessa; six sisters:  Helen Gonzalez and Antonia Aguilar, both of Lamesa, Emily Rodriguez and Elda Hernandez, both of San Angelo, Maria Luisa Gomez of Corpus Christi, and Juanita Flores of Midland; and three grandchildren.

In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by two brothers:  Pablo Gomez Jr. and Victor Gomez; and her sister:  Micaela Gomez.

Funeral services will be 10:00 am Saturday, March 8, 2014 at Acres West 24 Hour Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, officiated by Pastor Juan Gaona and Rolando Gomez.  Interment will be at 1:00 pm in Ackerly, TX at Ackerly Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Christine Esther Wertz

Christine Esther Wertz, age 56, of Odessa, died Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at Odessa Regional Medical Center.  She was born in Lewisberry, PA on August 26, 1957 to Lee and Viola June (Myers) Miller.  She was a homemaker.

She is survived by her husband:  Norman Wertz of Odessa; son:  Cody Wertz of Odessa; daughter:  September Whitmire of Midland; brother:  Charles “Chuck” Myers of Bradford, PA; four sisters:  Diane, Cindy, Evonne, and Lynn; and two grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at a later date.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

James Leon Maikranz
James Leon Maikranz
James Leon Maikranz, age 79, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at his home. He was born in Owensville, IN on February 5, 1935 to the late Doyle and Edith Helen (Wilson) Maikranz. James was a US Air Force Veteran, Airman 2nd Class. He came to Odessa in 1963.

Jim worked as an accountant for 51 years. A hard worker, he retired three times, but could not stay away. He was also the owner of the Skylight Lounge from 1974-1976. An adventurer, however, he was not one to work so much that he never had time for fun. He was an outdoorsman and avid archer, who had won numerous archery competitions. (In spite of that, he never quite got over his fear of snakes.) He was a longtime music lover, who collected 33’s, 45’s, and 78’s and had moved up with the new technology into an extensive cd collection. Jim loved going to garage sales, playing pool, and was such an expert at playing “claw” games that he had a huge number of stuffed animals. His stuffed animal collection finally became so large that he donated bags and bags of them to local nursing homes – to the delight of the residents there.

Jim lived by the motto of “Live and let live”. He was a good Christian who never cursed and was accepted and incorporated into Fernando’s family for 37 years.

Those left to cherish his memory and mourn his loss are his mate: Fernando Williams of Odessa, Fernando’s family: Mary Dean, Martha Jean Fowler, Angie Morrow, Manuel D. Chavarria, and Joe Max Carpenter; and numerous friends.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings: Bill, Donald, and Nancy.

Alessandro Alvarez

Alessandro Alvarez, an infant was born and passed away on March 6, 2014 at Odessa Regional Medical Center in Odessa. Alessandro was born to Sergio Cuevas Alvarez and Marcela Garcia both of Odessa.

Survivors are his parents: Alessandro and Marcela Alvarez, paternal grandparents: Magdalena Cuevas and Serafin Alvarez, maternal grandparents: Benita and Jose Rodriguez, and David Garcia.

Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Los Angeles Gardens of Ector County Cemetery, Odessa. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd, Odessa.

Leonardo Brito, Sr
Leonardo Brito, 49, passed away at his home in Odessa on Saturday March 8, 2014. Leonardo was born to Bernarde and Azucena on June 30, 1964 Ojinaga, Mexico.

Leonardo loved church. He was a devoted Christian man who loved the Lord with all his heart. Leonardo enjoyed Christian music and loved to play it loud. His passion was his kids and especially his grandbaby, Trey Rodriquez (his little big man). He enjoyed food his favorite was beans and papas with Chile. Leonardo loved dancing. He was a very strong man. Leonardo loved to be at the ranch and tend to the chickens and goats and his dogs. He will be greatly missed and will always be in our hearts.

Those left to cherish his memories are his sons: Leonardo “Leo” Brito Jr., and David Brito both of Odessa, daughter: Michelle Brito and husband Matthew Rodriquez, grandson; Trey Rodriquez, father; Bernabe Brito, brothers; Gabriel brito of Odessa, Joel Brito of Hobbs, Octaviano brito, Bernabe Jr Brito, Leobardo Brito, Arnol Brito all of Odessa, sisters; Angela Rodriguez, Agripina Rivera, Azucena Salazar, Angelica Romero, Alma Brito, Arsenia Guevara all of Odessa.

He is preceded in death by his mother: Azucena Calderon Brito.

Prayer service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10, 2014, at Asamblea Apostolic de la fe en Cristo Jesus. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2014, 1:00 p.m. At Asamblea Apostólica de la fe en Cristo Jesús, 5533 Mapp St, Odessa Texas. Officiated by Brother Roman Arreola, interment will follow at Peaceful Gardens Ector County cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W University Blvd, Odessa Texas.
Charles Ray Bynum

Charles Ray Bynum, age 47, of Odessa, passed away Monday, March 3, 2014 at Medical Center Hospital. He was born in Levelland, TX on March 23, 1966.
Memorial Services will be 7:00 pm Thursday, March 13, 2014 at West Odessa First Baptist Church, 11300 W. University, Odessa, officiated by Pastor Glenn Clark. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Jose Barrera Puente

Jose Barrera Puente, age 74, of Odessa, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 11, 2014 at his home.  He was born in San Carlos, Coahuila, Mexico on March 19, 1939 to the late Erasmo and Domitila (Puente) Barrera.  He was a farmer and rancher, who loved ranch life, his tractors, and his ’82 Ford – “La Pedora”.

Jose was an awesome dad.  When he lost his sons:  Jose Fidencio Barrera and Erasmo Barrera in an accident involving a drunk driver.  From that point on, he poured himself into his daughter, Adaelia, spoiling her rotten.  As a child, when she was supposed to wash dishes, he would do it for her.  When he became ill, Adaelia stayed devotedly by his side.

Jose was a hero to his grandchildren.  He supported them unconditionally and they saw him as more like a father than a grandfather.  Their “Apa” faithfully attended their sporting events and they loved to spend time with him at his ranch.  His main priority was his wife – the love of his life – his “Viejita” and his love for his children and grandchildren was amazing.  He had special nicknames for everyone.  Jose was down to earth and full of life.  He taught his children and grandchildren about life, enjoying your work, and appreciating the gifts that God gave.  His grandchildren remember him as a strong man with distinctive fluffy peppery hair that enjoyed ice cream and Dr. Pepper.  He will always live in their hearts.

He is survived by his wife:  Zulema (Ramirez) Barrera of Odessa; daughter:  Adaelia Quiñonez and husband Socorro of Odessa; three brothers:  Venencio Barrera and wife Guadalupe of Crane, Juan Manuel Barrera and wife Alma Leticia of Big Lake and Francisco Barrera and wife Alma Isabel of Big Lake; sisters:  Maria de Los Angeles Olivo of Del Rio, Dolores Barquing of New Braunfels, Maria Luisa Barrera of San Carlos, Coahuila, MX, Genoveva Juarez and husband Florentino Torreon of Coahuila, MX; six grandchildren:  Jose Erasmo Quiñonez, Moises Quiñonez and wife Clarisbel Gomez, Socorro Quiñonez, Magdalena Quiñonez, Marisela Quiñonez and husband Moises Vega, Jr., Sarah Quiñonez; and six great-grandchildren:  Moises Quiñonez, Jr., Arely Quiñonez, Zaniel Aguirre, Marc Anthony Quiñonez, Abel Herrera, and Adaelia Quiñonez.

Funeral services will be at a later date in San Carlos, Coahuila, Mexico.  Burial will be at Panteon de Balcones in San Carlos.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel in Odessa and La Nueva Funeraria in Acuña,  Mexico.

Maxine Hylton

Maxine Lois Hylton, age 83, of Odessa, passed from this life on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Hospice House of Odessa.  She was born in Mt. Vernon, Indiana on July 12, 1930 to the late Burley G. and Mabel Magdalene (White) Holland.  She was a home health caretaker.

Maxine was an humble servant who loved Jesus and tried to honor God daily.  She enjoyed reading faith based books.  She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Those left to cherish her memory are her sons:  Dennis Bailey and wife Lore of Junction City, KS and Terry Bailey and wife Joy of Longview; four daughters:  Gloria Davis and husband Buddy and Lois Bailey, all of Odessa, Charlene Bailey of Gladewater, and Melissa Bailey of Gilmer; ten grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two brothers:  Dale and Bob Holland; sister:  Verla Lay; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, officiated by Pastor Shaye Lamb.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

R Brewer jr
Randolph Brewer, Jr.

Randolph Brewer, Jr., age 63, of Odessa, passed away on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 at Medical Center Hospital.  He was one of ten children, born in Casa Grande, AZ on February 14, 1951to the late Randolph and Velma Louis (Knott) Brewer.  He was a master plumber and he truly enjoyed his job.

Junior never stayed put for long. He had a penchant for traveling and enjoyed fishing.  He liked to kick back and relax and loved the “night life”.  Junior thought the world of his only sister and called her “Sis” always, and his grandchildren were his heart.

His parents and all of his brothers precede him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son:  Randy Brewer and wife Wendy of Athens, TX; daughters:  Sheila Whitfield of Tool, TX and Barbara Roberts and husband Shane of Newbern, NC; sister:  Mildred Calhoun of Seagoville, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. 

We love and miss you, Dad. Rest in Peace.

Visitation will be at Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd. Odessa, TX Saturday, March 15, 2014 from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm and Sunday, March 16, 2014 from 1:00 to 9:00 pm, with the family receiving friends and sharing memories Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:00 pm.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
