R Houghton
Rita Elaine Houghton

Rita Elaine Houghton, age 68, of Odessa, entered into rest in the arms of our Lord on Sunday, February 02, 2014, at her home. She was born December 6, 1945 in League City, TX to the late Benjamin Arthur Barron and Lillie Mae (Carney) Barron. Rita married the love of her life, Paul George Houghton, at the Foursquare Church in Odessa on November 27, 1965. They worshipped at Grace Fellowship Church.

In her younger days, Rita worked as a secretary for Sanitary Linen and worked in childcare for several years. She liked fishing and camping. Rita enjoyed sewing and was an excellent cook. One of her favorite pastimes was shopping. She loved to sing hymns and served as a worship leader for several years.  More than anything, Rita was a dedicated wife and mother whose family was her world. She loved her grandbabies unconditionally and after retirement she was seldom found without a grandchild in tow.  Her home and heart were always full.

Those left to cherish her memory are four children: Melissa Johnson and husband Dwayne, Kerris Flowers and husband Warren, Ernest Houghton and wife Myna, and Martha McDougle, all of Odessa; brother: Norman “Sonny” Barron of Harrah, OK; sisters: Barbara Legge of Edmond, OK and Donna Steel of Midland; eleven grandchildren: Nicole Johnson, Katy Armstrong, Joshua Johnson, Lainey McDougle, Ryan Houghton, Landon McDougle, Matthew  Houghton, Caleb Johnson, Kelsey Houghton, Trey Flowers, Marisa Fierro, all of Odessa; two honorary grandchildren: Jordan Carvajal and Andrew Carvajal, both of Conroe, TX; one great-grandchild: Evan Sandoval; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband: Paul Houghton; son and daughter-in-law: David Houghton and wife Billie; grandson: Timothy Houghton; and siblings: Mary Merritt, Edna Barron, Louis Barron, Donald Barron, Leon Barron, Bernice Landfair and James Barron.

Family visitation will be Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be at Acres West Funeral Chapel at 2:00 pm Friday, February 7, 2014, Pastor Robert Lamb, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Mike Custer

Mike Custer, 71, of Odessa was called to heaven on February 3, 2014 in Odessa. Mike was born in Compton, California on September 27, 1942. Mike was an office equipment repairman for 30 + years before retiring. He served in the Navy.

Mike was a Jack-of-all-trades who liked to wheel and deal, once trading a copy machine for flying lessons. He was a music lover, a joker, and could spin a good tale. Mike never met a stranger but could be a little “crotchety” at times. He had a big heart, but did not want to show it. Mike loved model trains and older classic cars. He was always tinkering with vehicles. Mike will be dearly missed.

Those left to cherish his memories are his wife: Ruth Henson Custer of Odessa, son: Michael Gene Custer of Iowa Park, TX, daughter: Terri Ann Stangby of Odessa, brother: Dan Custer and wife Sheila of Brighton, CO, and three grandchildren: Robert Arlen Custer Jr, Crystal Deanne Custer and Michael Dean Custer.

Mike is preceded in death by his parents: Larry and Shirley Wagner Custer, son: Robert Arlen Custer, son-in-law: Bob Stangby, and brothers: Larry Custer and Fred Custer.

Memorial Services will be held at 11:00 am, on Saturday, February 8, 2014 at Acres West Funeral Chapel 8115 W. University Blvd in Odessa, officiated by Chaplain Larry Hood.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd, Odessa, TX 79764.

Lannie Lawrence Sandlin

Lannie Lawrence Sandlin, age 56, of Odessa, passed away on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 at Sienna Nursing Home in Odessa.  He was born in Jacksonville, FL on December 28, 1957.  He was the main troubleshooter in construction for Butler Builder’s International.

He is survived by his parents:  Jimmy Lawrence Sandlin and Mona Rae (Powell) Sandlin of Odessa; son:  Jimmy Lawrence Sandlin II of Little River, KS; daughter:  Lana Rae Sandlin of Lyons, KS; and brother:  Bradford Ray Sandlin of Odessa.

Memorial services will be 1:00 pm Monday, February 17, 2014 at Crescent Park Baptist Church of Odessa, officiated by Dr. David Miller.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory.

Shirley Leona Boykin

Shirley Leona Boykin, 76, of Odessa passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2014 at Medical Center Hospital CCU in Odessa. Following her late husband Glenn Boykin, who passed away 2 years ago, February 4, 2012.

She was also preceded in death by her parents Willie Clarence Parker and Frances Elizabeth (Harp) Parker, and her brother Clint Darrell Parker.

She was a member of the Northside Baptist Church. Shirley enjoyed watching westerns such as those starring Gene Autry and Roy Rogers. She loved the color purple, loved flowers and cooking, and could cook for an army. Spending time with her dogs was a favorite pastime. “Chaquita” her Chihuahua was her darling.

Survivors of the couple are their sons: Ronnie Boykin and wife Heidi Boykin of Odessa, Donnie Boykin and wife Diana Boykin of Midland; daughter: Debra Patricia Redd of Odessa; grandchildren: Shay Clark, Christopher Boykin and wife Cenea, Summer Doyle and husband Paul, Autumn Boykin, Britney Boykin, Stormy Boykin, Hope Mills and husband David, Mitchell Boykin and fiancé Krystal, Jay Redd, Raney Nunez and husband Juan: 12 great grandchildren and 2 on the way.

The Family will receive friends at Acres West Funeral Chapel on Monday, February 10, 2014 from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at 1 pm, officiated by Pastor Clydel Chapman at Acres West Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Garden Ector County Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Shay Clark, Mitchell Boykin, DeeJay Redd, Christopher Boykin, Pelo Mendoza, and David Mills. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Linda Kay Green

Linda Kay Green, 61, of Odessa, was called to Heaven on February 8, 2014 in Odessa. She was born Monday, June 30, 1952 in Weatherford, TX to Jimmie Don Glaze and Vada Juanell Stevens. She married Larnce Wayne Green on March 24, 1971 in Odessa. 

Linda worked as an attendant in a Laundromat until her health would not allow it. She was honery, always spoke her mind and loved being with her grandchildren. She was big on geneology and attending family reunions, and enjoyed working with Patty while they traced their roots. Linda loved bingo and drove to Oklahoma to play on an Indian reservation. She enjoyed watching old Westerns and listening to music from the 50’s, 60’s, Doo Wop, Rock N Roll.  She also liked to fish and hunt. Linda loved to pick on Wayne just to aggravate him until he told her of his Love for her. She liked doing arts and crafts with Patty. 

Those left to cherish her memories are her husband of 42 years: Larnce Wayne Green, her mother: Juanell Glaze, one son: Richard Wayne Green and wife Laura; one daughter: Patty Yount and husband Chris, all of Odessa; three brothers: Ricky Allen Glaze and wife Rhonda of Stephenville, Steve Glaze and wife Deanna of Weatherford and JD Glaze and wife Sue of Baytown; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed and will always be in our hearts. 

Linda is preceded in death by her father: Jimmie Don Glaze and her great-grandson:  AJ Reece Yount.

Graveside services will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at American Heritage Cemetery in Midland County, officiated by Jimmy Braswell. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W. University Blvd, Odessa.

Carly Bustillos

Carly Bustillos, an infant, of Odessa passed away on Monday, February 10, 2014 at Medical Center Hospital of Odessa. Carly was born to Carlos Bustillos and Nubia Dominguez.

Survivors also include paternal grandparents: Eutemio and Irma Bustillos of Odessa, maternal grandparents: Gilberto Bejarano and Blanca Dominguez of Odessa, and her sister: Abril Bustillos of Odessa.

Graveside Services will be held on Thursday, February 13, 2014 at 9:00 a.m. at Los Angeles Gardens at Ector County Cemetery in Odessa, officiated by Fr. Joe Uecker. Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel, 8115 W University Blvd, Odessa.

Rebecca “Becky” Jones

Rebecca “Becky” Jones, age 64 of Odessa, passed away February 11, 2014.  She was born August 3, 1949 in Crane, TX to Jeff Bettis and Martha Jane (Kinne) Thompson. 

Her first marriage to Donald Gregory Penn saw her relocate to San Antonio.  She met and married Ricky Jay Jones her 2nd husband in 1984 who preceded her in death in 1989.  A very strong person and always willing to help her family and friends, Becky had a tendency to worry about others before herself. She loved music, dancing and general fun. She was never one to turn down an invite to visit Las Vegas or nearby casino and enjoyed the slot machines. 

Becky was a great cook and owned/operated Skipper’s Galley, even though she did not like seafood. She worked hard and played hard and had a great sense of humor. The Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs were her favorite teams.  She was able to help her two sons attend and graduate from Texas A&M and Texas Tech as a single mom. 

Those left to cherish her love and memories are two sons: Chris Penn and wife, Jennifer of Dallas and Randall Jones and wife, Zoe of Austin, two sisters, Emily Jane McElveen of Crane and IdaBeth Armstrong of Odessa, and one brother, Donald Ray Thompson and wife, Naomi of Kermit. She also leaves behind two grandchildren, Oliver and Archie Penn of Dallas and three nieces, Lindsey Kirk, Holly McElveen and Amy Barnes and three nephews, Avery Armstrong, Zachary Thompson and Levi Thompson. 

Memorial services are scheduled for 4:00 pm Saturday February 15, 2014 at Gardendale Community Center, 4226 East Larkspur Lane, Gardendale, TX, 79758.  Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory and condolences may be sent to the family online at

Sara Ortiz de Montoya

Sara Ortiz de Montoya, age 78, of Presidio, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Hospice House of Odessa. She was born in El Mulato, Chihuahua, Mexico on November 3, 1935 to the late Apolonio and Isidra (Hernandez) Ortiz.  She met Anastacio Montoya, the love of her life, in El Mulato in 1952 and they married on September 19, 1952.  She was a homemaker and a member of Santa Teresa de Jesus Catholic Church in Presidio.

Sara was a strong willed and determined lady.  When she set her mind to something, she made it happen.  She was very firm and always spoke her mind, but had such nice way of putting things, it never offended others.  Sara was a great cook and a loving and caring person who was affectionate to everyone.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years:  Anastacio Montoya of Presidio; son:  Reymundo Montoya of Presidio; daughter:  Arcilia Pando and husband Mario of Presidio; two brothers:  Jose Ortiz and wife Lois of Kermit and Felix Ortiz of Andrews; sister:  Paula Aguilar of Odessa; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Her parents and grandson:  Mario M. Pando, Jr. precede her in death.

Funeral services will be in El Mulato at a later date with burial to follow at Cementerio del Mulato.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa and Funeraria de Valle of Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico.

A Thurman
Alford “Al” Ray Thurman

Alford “Al” Ray Thurman, long time Odessa resident, lost his fight with lung cancer on February 11, 2014.

Alford was born on November 2, 1949 in Clovis, NM to Malcolm Lee Thurman and Virginia Mae Gurley Thurman. The family moved from NM to OK, and back to NM, this time settling in Portales. Alford attended the schools there, and graduated in 1968. In May of 1969, Alford joined the US Air Force, doing basic training at Lackland AFB in Wichita Falls, and was then transferred to Shepherd AFB in San Antonio, TX. Alford was honorably discharged from the Air Force to care for his father who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident.

On August 18, 1970, Alford married Mary Squibb, also of Portales. Following the birth of their second daughter in 1973, the young family moved to Odessa, TX, where they remained until his death.

During his early years in Odessa, Alford made his living driving trucks. During the course of the 25 years he drove, he covered 48 states and Canada. Some of the local companies he drove for were Champion Chemicals, G & RG Trucking, and Schwerman Trucking, and Express Energy, among others.

Alford’s lifelong passion was motorcycles. He got his first taste of riding when he was still in diapers. His parents were avid riders and that love was passed on to both their sons. Alford was rarely without a bike. This passion brought many friends into his life. He and his wife joined a local group of bikers, the T-Twisters. Alford was a 15 year member of this group, and an officer in good standing when he passed away.

Family members that deeply miss him are his wife of 43 years, Mary; his two daughters, Latisha Ponce de Leon and Nicole Jensen; seven grandchildren, Steven Ponce de Leon, Sam Ponce de Leon, Zackary Zavala, Zane Zavala, Ryan Zavala, O’Ryann Jensen and Ryden Jensen. Also surviving is his brother Mike, of Las Cruces.

Family visitation and funeral services will be held at Acres West Funeral Chapel. The family will receive visitors from 6pm to 8pm on Friday, February 14, 2014. Funeral service will be Saturday, February 15, 2014 at 11am, officiated by Brother Pete Putman. The burial will follow at American Heritage Memorial Park and Cemetery, on FM 1788, a mile and a half north of Highway 191.

Etta Ann Smith

Etta Ann Smith, age 83, of Odessa, TX, passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2014 at Hospice House in Odessa. She was born in Tulia, TX on January 1, 1931 to Lonnie Lawson and Jessie Pearl (Ruland) McCracken. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church, and had retired from Southwestern Bell Telephone Company.

After her high school graduation in 1948, she visited Ruidoso, NM and fell in love with it. Etta purchased a cabin there and put bird feeders up where she enjoyed watching hummingbirds. She also collected hummingbird figurines. She liked to grow flowers in her greenhouse, and collected State quarters for her grandkids. Etta enjoyed playing the penny slots at casinos, and reading, with one of her favorite authors being Stuart Woods. She was the secretary of the Southwestern Bell Telephone Bowling League.

Those left to cherish her memory are husband David E. Smith; son Jerry David Smith and wife Cathy of Odessa; daughters Suetta McCorcle and husband Harley of Gonzales, TX, and Sherri Lynn Helmstetler and husband Johnny of Mt. Vernon, TX; 7 grandkids, Tanni Gerwick, Kelli Robillard, JohnDavid Helmstetler, Jacquelyn Parr, Deborah Moravec, Tye Welch, Tanner Wilkerson; great grandchildren Madison Wood, Emily Tidwell, Molly Tidwell, Heather Wiggins, Katelyn Welch, McKayla Welch, Cheyenne Wilkerson, Aubrey Wilkerson, Brylee Wilkerson, Chloe Helmstetler, Baylee Helmstetler, Damian Davilla, Ariel Davilla, Abigayle Helmstetler, Cadence Parr, Ethan Parr, Gavin Gerwick, Gage Gerwick, and Grayson Gerwick; and great great grandchildren Mia Robillard and Emma Wiggins. Mom is sleeping in peace, now.

No services will be held, and in lieu of flowers, donations in Etta’s name may be made to the Hospice House at 903 N. Sam Houston Ave. Odessa, TX, 79761. Arrangements have been entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
