W Oliver
William Simon “Bill” Oliver

William Simon “Bill” Oliver, age 70, of Van Horn, TX, passed from this life on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at his residence.  He was born in Alpine, TX on May 26, 1943 to the late Russell and Bertha Jo (Glasscock) Oliver. 

Bill’s parents ran the rock shop in Van Horn and he later took over its operation.  He was an avid rock hunter.  He could not sit still for very long and loved to walk and enjoy the great outdoors.  He was always on the go and had a passion for life.  He was also a darned good carpenter.  It was very difficult for him when cancer limited his ability to communicate and he began to stay at home.  Bill was a strong Christian man who reminded his son often, “Boy, better keep your eyes looking up.”  He did not like the government, but trusted the Lord.

Those left to cherish his memory are his sons:  William Oliver and wife Deja of San Antonio and Russell James Oliver of Van Horn; daughter:  Deena Vlach and husband Larry of Columbus, TX; brother:  Joe Oliver of Odessa; sister:  Sue Flinn and husband Ray of Sonora; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services to honor his memory will be 11:00 am Saturday, October 19, 2013 at Van Horn Community Church, in Van Horn, TX, officiated by Rev. Rodney Tilley.  He will be laid to rest with his parents at Sonora Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Odessa.

Gary L. Adcock

Gary L. Adcock, 64, of Odessa passed away Thursday October 10, 2013 at his residence.  He was born August 21, 1949 to Oran and Mearl Adcock.  He married Rita Spurgeon on June 5, 1987 and celebrated 26 years of marriage.  He was a member at the Faith Church of The Nazarene.  Gary enjoyed fishing, golfing, baseball, football, hockey, a little drag racing and enjoyed watching his grandkids play all of the above. He worked in the oilfield as a rig and heavy equipment mechanic working in the US as well as Siberia, Ecuador, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents Oran and Mearl Adcock, brothers, James Adcock, Dewaine Adcock and wife Sylvia, a granddaughter Hayley Adcock, and a niece Camilla Adcock, and they have welcomed him to their heavenly home.

Those left to cherish his memory: wife Rita, brother Larry Adcock and wife Letha, a sister in law Lela Adcock, sons, Terry Ahrendt and wife Mary, Michael Ahrendt and wife Donna, James Adcock and wife Melissa, daughters Robbie and husband Greg Ash, Rhonda and husband Jerry Carter all of Odessa, 17 grandkids and 5 great grandkids and numerous nieces and nephews. 

Services will be held Monday October 14, 2013 at 11:00 am at the Faith Church of the Nazarene, 3501 N. Golder, Odessa, TX, officiated by Pastor Barry Reiswig.  Services are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and condolences to the family may be sent online at

Honorary Pallbearers: Rodney Adcock, Richard Adcock, Sheldon Adcock, Guy Adcock and Joe Dan Adcock and Patrick Bryant.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the West Texas Cancer Center as we appreciate the services and care they provided.  The family would also like to personally thank Star Hospice for the great care they provided. 

Bernard Allen DeChant

Bernard Allen DeChant, age 67, of Odessa, died Friday, October 11, 2013 at his home.  He was born in Avon, Ohio on January 16, 1946 to Bernard Frank DeChant and Margaret (Kral) DeChant.  He was a US Navy Veteran, a carpenter, and a plumber.

He is survived by his wife:  Mona DeChant of Odessa; two sons:  Wayne Powell and Wade Powell, both of Odessa; daughter:  Elaine Quseda of Austin; siblings:  Thomas DeChant of Gig Harbor, WA, Dennis DeChant, Loretta Smith, and Dorothy Knapp, all of Odessa, Teresa Baxter of El Cajon, CA, Ronald DeChant of San Diego, CA, and Susan DeChant of Odessa; and three grandchildren.

No services will be held at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory. 

Kathryn Elizabeth Gray

Kathryn Elizabeth Gray, age 91, of Odessa, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2013 at Crane Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.  She was born in Watsontown, PA on October 7, 1922 to the late Frank and Kathryn (Pfleegor) Houtz.  She was retired from Texas Instruments.  She was a member of the Monterey Church of Christ of Lubbock, TX.

She is survived by her sons:  Robert W. Gray, Jr. of Houston, Dennis Gray of Odessa, and Jeff Gray of Mineral Wells; daughter:  Kara Ramirez of Pearland, TX; and six grandchildren.

No services will be held at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Crematory of Odessa, TX.

Ruben Medina Hernandez

Ruben Medina Hernandez, age 42 of Odessa passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2013. He was born in Pecos, Texas on February 1, 1971 to Ruben Flores Carrasco and Maria Morales. Ruben worked in the restaurant business. He was Catholic.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his father: Ruben Flores Carrasco of Pecos; mother: Maria Morales of Odessa; sons: John Anthony Hernandez and Ruben Hernandez, Jr. both of Lubbock; brother: Joe Angel Hernandez of Odessa; sister: Liz Casas of Odessa; 2 uncles: Pete Morales & Pat Medina both of Odessa; 2 aunts: Frances Garcia of Odessa & Antonia Morales of Pecos; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rosary will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 17, 2013 at Acres West Funeral Chapel.  Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, October 18, 2013 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Odessa officiated by Father Michael Rodriguez. Interment will follow at Ector County Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Maxine Doris Sturtevant

Maxine Doris Sturtevant, age 84, of Odessa, passed away on Monday October 14, 2013, at her residence.  She was born in West Fork Township, Iowa on March 25, 1929.  Raised in the Methodist Church, Maxine sang in the church choir for many years.  She kept a garden and, with her mother, canned the harvest every year.  Everything she did, she did with love and a personal touch, such as making handmade birthday and Christmas cards, and crocheting tree ornaments for her family every Christmas. 

Maxine raised seven children.  When she married Clarence G. “Kelly” Sturtevant, she occasionally went on the road with him, driving his truck through the western states.  They lived in Sloan, IA until 2006, then moved to Colorado Springs, CO.  In 2009, when her husband’s illness had progressed to the point that driving in the Colorado hills was an issue, they moved to the flatlands of Odessa. 

Maxine was preceded in death by her parents:  Frank and Alice (Wendt) Kinnamon; her first husband:  Richard D. Means, her son:  Steve D. Means, and one brother:  Dick Kinnamon.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband:  Kelly Sturtevant of Odessa; two sons:  Craig Means and wife Toby of Lake Havasa, AZ and Guy Means and wife Mary of Odessa; daughters:  Kathy Buckholz and husband Stan of Truesdale, IA, Michelle Mondragon and husband Craig of Colorado Springs, CO, Melanie Stone and husband Kevin of Gresham, OR, and Lisa Fox and husband Bryan of Pineville, MO; brother:  Dean Kinnamon of Onawa, IA; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

Memorial services in Odessa will be 6:00 pm Sunday, October 20, 2013 at the Potter’s House Christian Church on E. 42nd Street, officiated by Pastor Wade Schultz.  Additional services will be at a later date in Onawa, IA.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa and Root Funeral Home in Iowa.

Austin Ray Romero

Austin Ray Romero, our beloved angel, returned to the arms of Jesus on Monday, October 14, 2013.  He came to be with us on May 12, 2013, born in Midland, TX along with his twin sister, Allyson Ray, to Schuyler Austin Ray Romero and Maricarmen Deyanira Reyes.

Those left to cherish his memory are his parents:  Austin Ray Romero and Maricarmen Reyes of Odessa; brother:  Gabriel Isaiah Barela of Odessa; sisters:  Allyson Ray Romero, Abriella Barela, Alizette Galvan, and Alexis Romero, all of Odessa; maternal grandparents:  Jesus “Jessie” and Noema Galvan of Odessa; paternal grandparents:  Isa Romero Jr. and Lydia Romero of Midland; maternal great-grandmother:  Carmen Escobar of Sonora; paternal great-grandparents:  Isa Romero Sr. and Delia Romero of Midland; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He was preceded to his Heavenly home by his great-grandfather:  Alcadio Escobar of Sonora. 

Graveside services will be 9:00 am, Friday, October 18, 2013 at Los Angeles Garden of Ector County Cemetery, officiated by Pastor Todd Starnes.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Selena Juanita Melson

Selena Juanita Melson, age 42, of Odessa, was called to heaven on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 in Odessa. Selena was born to Leslie and Sally Schoonover Melson on November 22, 1970 in Odessa. She was a homemaker.

Those left to cherish her memories are her parents: Leslie and Sally Melson of Odessa, paternal grandmother: Lena Bailey of Stephenville, TX, son: Kevin Roberts of Odessa, daughters: Sally Jo Melson and Leslie Ray Mang, both of Midland, and brother: Richard Long of Wichita Falls, TX.

Stephen Milford “Steve” Farris

Stephen Milford “Steve” Farris, age 54, of Odessa, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at his residence.  He was born in Odessa on January 30, 1959 to the late Theo and Annie (Mack) Farris.  He was a retired oilfield machinist, who worked in that field for many years.

Steve loved the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Longhorns.  His favorite pastime was tinkering with and souping up old cars, but he also kept an immaculate yard.  He adored his nieces and nephews and they idolized him in return.  He kept up with them on Facebook and was always interested in hearing how they the others in the family were doing.   His favorite saying was, “I’ll be dog!”

Those left to cherish his memory are his brothers:  Theo Maurice Farris of Llano and Tim Farris and wife Shirley of Tyler; sister:  Janice Goss of Sulphur Springs; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers:  David and Nathan.

Gloria Pittman Thompson

Gloria Pittman Thompson, age 53, of Odessa, passed away Friday, October 18, 2013 after a long battle with breast cancer. 

She was a loving wife and mother.  Gloria never met a stranger.  She enjoyed life – lived hard and loved hard. She always put God first in everything. 

Gloria was born in Columbia, MS on June 15, 1960 to Wilbur Gene Pittman and Mazell (Woods) Pittman.  She married Jimmy Wayne Thompson on September 11, 1993 in Odessa. She was a member of Grandview Church of God.  Gloria had a full life and various interests.  She worked as a bartender and an accountant.  She was president of the Odessa Headstart, and rode with and was Secretary Treasurer for Ector County Sheriff’s Posse, and was a Lioness of the Ector Lion’s Club.  An animal lover, she enjoyed barrel racing and roping and being around horses. 

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband:  Jimmy Wayne Thompson; three sons:  Donald Ray Hodges, Jr., Brandon Carter, and Curtis Wayne Thompson; daughters:  Misty Anderson and Dominique Hodges; sister:  Lorie Ann Miles; seven grandchildren:  Shawnda Weeks, Brandon Weeks, Cheyanne Anderson, Nathian Meadows, Jasmine Gameros, Tosha Thompson, and Ashley Thompson; two great-grandchildren; mother-in-law:  Pat Thompson; son-in-law:  Bruce Meadows of Odessa; sisters-in-law:  Brenda Werner, Lynn Thompson, Linda Thompson, Gwen Thompson, and Sheila Thompson; brothers-in-law:  Curtis Thompson, Gary Thompson; brother and sister-in-law:  Mr. and Mrs. Tony Roberts; and fifty-two nieces and nephews including two special nieces: Bridget Walley and Connie Pittman.

She is preceded in death by her parents:  Wilbur and Mazell Pittman; brother:  Wilbur Gene Pittman, Jr.; father-in-law:  J.W. Thompson; brother-in-law:  Wade Thompson; and stepmom:  Jo Ann Pittman.
