Joe Luis "Louie" Zapata

Joe Luis Zapata “Louie”, age 42, died Friday, December 24, 2010 at Medical Center Hospital.  He was born in Colorado City, CO on March 5, 1968 to Luis and Olivia Zapata.  He worked in paint and body work and was a welder’s helper.   

He is survived by his wife:  Phoebe Zapata of Odessa; father:  Luis Zapata of Odessa; grandparents:  Johnny and Delia Subia of Odessa; step daughter:  Meagan Chandler of Odessa; brothers:  Albert Isaac Kruse and Anthony Zapata of Odessa; and sister:  Delma Rodriguez of Odessa. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Johnny Thomason.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Heidi Nycole Evans Marichalar

Heidi Nycole Evans Marichalar, our baby girl, left this life on Sunday, December 26, 2010 to be with her Lord.   

Heidi lived life to the fullest, never leaving a stone unturned.  She had a heart of gold, leaving a legacy of love for her boys to carry on.  When a laugh was needed, Heidi was always there to make it happen.  Her love for family and friends to Heidi was deep and true.  Heidi had a light in her eyes and a smile on her face that will forever guide us.   

She was born in Odessa on January 25, 1988 to Melissa Evans Ostergren and Ray Marichalar.  She was a student. 

Those left to cherish her love and memory include both parents; her mother:  Melissa Ostergen and husband Roy  of Odessa; and father:  Ray Marichalar and wife Connie Marichalar of Keller, TX; paternal grandmother:  Josephine Marichalar of Odessa; maternal grandparents:  Shirley Clayton of Odessa and Virgil Houser of Coker, AL; two sons:  Holden Lane Robinson and Carson James Palmer, both of Odessa; brothers:  Heath Goodson and his children, Braesyn and Harlii, Zachary Mitchel Marichalar, Alexander Ray Marichalar, and Landon Pierce, all of Odessa; sisters:  Holly Gatlin, Heather Welch and her children, Jaiden and Seven, and Hope Lary and her children, Kiara, Bella, and Aaron, all of Odessa; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and hundreds of friends; and her good friend and supporter:  David Wright of Odessa. 

Her paternal grandfather, Eliseo Marichalar, and her Granny Sam, precede her in death. 

Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Thursday, December 30, 2010 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Pastor Robert “Rough” Lamb.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Brian Vencent Brower

Brian Vencent Brower, age 53, died Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Hospice House of Odessa.  He was born in Los Angeles, CA on August 13, 1957 to Vaughn and Gladys (Ratcliff) Brower.  He was a cook and was a former Corpus Christi resident.

He is survived by three brothers:  Kyle Brower of Missoula, MT, Blake Brower of Cedar Hill, MO, and Eric Brower of San Diego, CA; two sisters:  Laura Burns of Cedar Hill, MO and Maureen Powell of Salt Lake City, UT; and his caregiver and best friend:  Tamra and Steven Lopez and their children, Joseph and Apryl Morris.

Memorial services will be held at Zion Ministries Church 7:00 pm, Thursday, December 30, 2010, officiated by Pastor Carrie Stanton.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Billy Wayne Durbin

Billy Wayne Durbin passed Monday Dec. 27, 2010 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa, TX after a long battle with illnesses. He was born June 27, 1957 in Kermit, TX to Delores and Wayne Durbin. Billy was loved by many and will be dearly missed.  

In his early years he worked in the oilfields well servicing and a driving trucks. One of his true loves was woodworking. Billy had a quick wit and was very humorous, always the life of the party.  You could always count on his karaoke rendition of  ”You Never  Even Called Me By My Name" to make you smile. A small tribute to the toughest man who ever lived:  After many hard fought battles, God has taken him in, no more suffering. Much love to our beautiful son and brother Billy.  

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother:  Delores Hamilton of Odessa; three brothers: Rick Durbin and Donnie Wadley, both of Odessa, and Terry Mathison of New Town, ND; and three sisters:  Tracy Travis of Hico, TX,  Faye Hayes of Roswell, NM, Juli Poe of Midland.

Albert James Gladding II

Albert James Gladding II passed away peacefully in his residence the morning of Tuesday, December 28, 2010. Albert was born in Oakland, CA on July 16, 1927 to Augustus L. Gladding and Ruth Clark Viehmann. He served in the U.S. Army’s 11th Airborne division in World War II, returning to civilian life to learn the family business at Gladding McBean in Lincoln, CA, later co-owning Gladding Ceramic Insulator in San Jose, CA.

He moved to Odessa, TX in 1983, where he worked as an aviation lineman for Wagner and Brown, retiring at the age of 70.

Survivors include his wife and partner of 40 years: Billie Jo Gladding; children: Albert James Gladding III of Concord, CA, Adriane Gladding of Odessa, Michael Tharp of Granbury, TX, and Kelley Bradshaw of Odessa.

Albert was the best partner a wife could have and the best father a child could ask for. If you knew Albert, you loved him.

Daniel Navarette Ortiz

Daniel Navarette Ortiz, age 45, passed away on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Hospice House of Odessa.  He was born in Pecos, TX on April 8, 1965 to Julian Aguilar Ortiz and Gloria Navarette Ortiz.  He was a machine operator. 

He is survived by his wife:  Tanja Dominguez Ortiz of Odessa; mother:  Gloria Navarette Ortiz of Odessa; four daughters:  Tiffany Ortiz of Odessa, Thacha Graf of San Antonio, Valentina Martinez of Odessa, and Savannah Flores of Odessa; three brothers:  Alfredo Ortiz of Odessa, Julian Ortiz of Lake Storm, IA, and Domingo Ortiz of Odessa; and five sisters:  Nellie Mata, Gloria Mendoza, Jessie Young, and Jesusita Young, all of Odessa, and Bellen Ramos of Portersville, CA. 

He was preceded in death by his father:  Julian Aguilar Ortiz; brother:  Raul Ortiz; and his sister:  Jessica Young. 

Funeral services will be 11 am Friday, December 31, 2010 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Sam Rodriguez.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Virgie Bernice Clary Chandler

Virgie Bernice Clary Chandler, 78, of Odessa was called home Tuesday, December 28, 2010. She was born on December 8, 1932 to Mr. and Mrs. George R. Clary in Breckenridge. She moved to Odessa from Breckenridge in 1951. Bernice married Roy Don Chandler on October 2, 1953 in Alamogordo, NM.

Bernice is preceded in death by her husband: Roy Don Chandler on July 6, 2007; her parents: George Rubin Clary and Virgie Lee Wells; her daughter: Brenda Kay Brych; granddaughter: Sandy Nance; two great-grandchildren: Kaitlen Parker and Roger Rogers; two sisters: Mildred Roberts and Bertie Segler; and three brothers: Johnny Roy, Jimmy Ray, and James Arnold Clary.

Survivors include one brother: George Donald Clary of Odessa; daughters: Barbara Nance, Linda Chandler, and Glenda Parshall, all of Odessa; sons: Eddie Chandler and Cole Chandler, both of Odessa; 22 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews and cousins.

In Memory of our Mother and Grandmother. You were a precious gift from God above, so much beauty, grace and love. You touched our hearts in so many ways, your smile so bright even on the bad days. You heard God’s whisper calling you home, you didn’t want to go and leave us alone. You loved us so much, you held on tight, till all the strength was gone and you could no longer fight. He called your name twice before, you knew you couldn’t make him wait anymore, so  you gave your hand to God and slowly drifted away knowing that with our love we will be together again someday.

Funeral services will he heldt at 2:00 pm Friday, December 31, 2010 at the Gunsight Baptist Church in Breckenridge with Rev. Erron Mercer officiating. Interment will be in Harpersville Cemetery in Breckenridge.

Pallbearers will be T.J. Rogers, Brian Wheeler, Shiloh Chandler, David Chandler, Philip Chandler, Jacob Parshall and Jason Parker.

John Paul Matthew Nunez

John Paul Matthew Nunez, an infant, was born and died on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Basin Healthcare Center in Odessa.

Survivors include his parents: Christopher and Adonica Nunez of Odessa; grandparents: Paul Sandoval of Crane, Matilda Sandoval of Odessa, and Dorthy and Rene Rodriguez of Odessa; great-grandmother: Edna Ontiveras of Odessa; great-grandfather: Jose Nunez of Odessa; two brothers: Christopher Jacob Nunez and Ryan Paul Nunez, both of Odessa; sister: Gladys Means of Odessa; and numerous cousins.

Graveside services will be 11:00 am on Monday, January 3, 2011 at West Texas Memorial Park in Midland, officiated by Deacon Julio Carrasco. Honorary pallbearers will be Christopher Nunez, David Martinez, James Nunez, Jerry Sanchez, Jimmy Baeza, and Angel Martinez. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel.

Kimberly Dawn Stunkard Ashcraft

Kimberly Dawn Stunkard Ashcraft, age 45, of Odessa, passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at Hospice House.  She was born in Dallas, TX on July 7, 1965.  She was a dollar store cashier.

She is survived by her father Terry Stunkard of Cumby, TX; her son:  Cody Harrison of Odessa; and two sisters:  Dina Stunkard of Odessa and Staci Strickland of Jefferson, TX.       

Her mother:  Nancy (Nance) Cook, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be at Acres West Funeral Chapel at 2:00 PM Friday, December 31, 2010, Larry Hood officiating.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Ronald “Ron” Gene Sims

Ronald “Ron” Gene Sims, age 69, of Odessa, passed away Thursday, December 30, 2010 at his residence. He was born in Eastland, TX on July 26, 1941 to Lennie James “L.J.” and Margaret F. (Holloway) Sims. He was a yard foreman for E.L. Farmer Trucking Company.

Ronald enjoyed being outdoors. His favorite pastimes included shooting sports, traveling, and hiking. He also enjoyed writing and was an avid animal lover.

Those left to cherish his love and memory are his wife: Sherry Sims of Fort Worth, TX; mother: Margaret Sims of Odessa; daughters: Amanda Clower and husband Jeff of Odessa and Annie Sims and husband Jeffery Jolly of Fort Worth; and two grandchildren: Jarien Jolly and Dustin Jolly of Fort Worth.

His father:  Lennie James Sims, preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be at Acres West Funeral Chapel at 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 5, 2011, Rev. Ken Black officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Mr. Virgil D. Hammond

Mr. Virgil D. Hammond, age 87 passed from this life on December 29, 2010 at Wellstar Cobb Hospital in Austell, Georgia.  He was born in Arkinda, Arkansas on June 23, 1923.  A veteran, Mr. Hammond served in the US Air Force during WWII. He worked as a tool pusher in the oil manufacturing business and was a member of the United Church of God. 

He is survived by his wife:  Gwendolyne Hammond of Villa Rica, GA; step-daughters:  Carol Corneilus and husband Everette of Augusta, GA and Dee Wilson and husband Steve of Villa Rica, GA; special friend whom Virgil raised as his own son:  Douglas Harrison of Houston, TX; sisters:  Oleda Manus and Carol Berry, both of Odessa; brother:  Eddie Hammond of Gatesville, TX; Step-grandchildren:  Angela and Gaylon Vinson, Christy and Joe Stradley, and David Wilson; Step-great-grandchildren:  Chelsey Vinson and Blake Vinson; and several nieces and nephews. 

Graveside services with military honors will be 10:00 am Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at the Odessa Garden of Ector County Cemetery.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Patricia Anne (Webb) Owens

Patricia Anne (Webb) Owens passed away at her residence in Stephenville, TX on Friday, December 31, 2010. She was born on Saturday, May 25, 1935 in Wink, TX to Richard and Wilma (Dinwiddie) Webb. 

Those left to cherish her love and memory are her sons:  Robbie L. Owens and wife Cynthia of Schriever, LA, Jeffery C. Owens, Sr. and wife Marsha of Stephenville, TX, and Malcolm E. Owens and wife Shelly of Odessa, TX; son-in-law:   Charlie Franks, Sr., husband of Vicki L. Franks of Odessa; two brothers: Dennis Webb of Kingman, AZ & Donald Webb of Yuma, AZ; one sister: Betty Sundwald of Odessa; her loving niece:  Peggy Cherry and husband David of Odessa; grandchildren:  Stephanie Blubaugh of Minot, ND, Jaime Owens of Gray, LA, Sarah Owens of Thibodaux, LA,  Kevin Goodman of Crum, TX, Anthony Goodman of Odessa, TX, Robin Goodman of Irving, TX, Jeffrey C. Owens, Jr. of Allen, TX, and  Jeffrey R. Owens of Stephenville, TX, Melissa Franks,  Charlie Franks Jr. and Toby Franks all of Odessa, Jennifer Owens and  Brody Owens of Odessa; twenty-two great grandchildren & one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister:  Martha Ballenger; son:  Russell L Griffin; and her daughter:   Vicki Lynn Franks.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 10:00AM at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Reverend Jimmy Braswell. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Garden in Ector County Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Jamie Owens, Charlie Franks, Toby Franks, Jeffrey R. Owens, and Tony Goodman. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brody Owens, Cameron Owens. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel. 

Learneda May Schneider

Learneda May Schneider, age 85, of Odessa, Texas, died Friday, December 31, 2010 at Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. She was born on July 29, 1925 to George L. and Eithel (Gray) Miller in Casper, Wyoming.  

As an infant, her parents moved to Marmorth, North Dakota. They moved back to Wyoming in 1932. Learneda received her education in Wyoming, graduating from Waskakie County High in Worland, Wyoming. She worked various jobs. In 1945, she married John Schneider. Learneda was active in the Altar Guild and Hobby Club. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother; sons: Kenneth Schneider, Kameron Schneider, Gerald Schneider, Dwain Schneider, and Jack Schneider; daughters: Sharon Schneider and Anna Marie Schneider; and great grandson: Hilton Dean Goff. 

She is survived by two sons: George Schneider and wife Deborah of Blessing, TX and James Schneider of Hobbs, NM; daughter: Judy Cawley and husband Terry of Odessa; two brothers: Delmer Miller of Casper, Wy, and Melvin Miller and wife Darlene of Austin, MN; three sisters: Katherine Madison of Casper, WY, Gwen Osborne of Reno, NV, and Bernadine Yotts of Julesburgh, CO; five grandchildren; and ten great grandchildren. 

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Acres West Funeral Chapel, officiated by Brother Jimmy Dennis. Interment will follow at a later date in North Dakota. Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel and Kresbach Funeral Home of Bowman, ND.
